Sales of Sony’s PlayStation 4 have now surpassed 22.3 million worldwide since it launched in November 2013. Incredibly, this translates to about one being sold every 2 seconds since its release.
According to the company’s latest financial report, Sony sold 14.8 million PS4s during the 12 month period that ended 31st of March 2015. They expect to sell another 16 million before the 31st of March 2016. Sales of the PS4 were actually so strong that Sony has claimed it was the key reason that revenue for the whole business increased by 7.2%.
However, despite the success of the PS4, Sony’s handheld devices have continued to struggle. Combined numbers of PSP and Vita sales dropped from 4.1 million to 3.3 million during the same 12 month period.
This period also saw Sony fall short of their targets by ¥126 billion ($1.05 billion). This was mainly due to their mobile communications division reporting a huge loss of ¥220.4 billion ($1.837 billion). They’re hopeful for a turnaround in the coming year though, with projected operating income of ¥140 billion.
It appears that Sony’s gaming and network services are at the forefront of the company’s success, with a 25% increase in sales year-over-year, accounting for ¥48.1 billion ($401 million), up from the loss in the previous fiscal year of ¥18.8 billion ($156 million).
“This significant improvement was primarily due to the impact of the above-mentioned increase in (PS4) sales,” the report detailed. “(This was) partially offset by the impact of the decrease in PS3 software sales, the unfavourable impact of the appreciation of the US dollar reflecting the high ratio of US dollar-denominated costs, as well as the recording of an 11.2bn ($93m) write-down of PS Vita and PS TV components in the current fiscal year.”
One of the reasons for the success of the PS4 could be down to some great exclusives, especially Bloodborne which Brian gave a 10/10 in our Bloodborne review, saying of it that “If you’ve been waiting for a reason to justify your purchase of a PlayStation 4 but have been let down so far with the system’s exclusives, then Bloodborne is the game which could well redeem Sony’s latest console in your eyes”.
