Evolve, the upcoming co-op multiplayer shooter from Left 4 Dead developer Turtle Rock which pits players against giant monsters, has added Tier 3 unlocks as a pre-order bonus for Xbox One players who pre-order. The unlocks apply to the current beta, but will also automatically unlock for the official release on February 10th.
Evolve‘s systems involve unlocking new tiers as they level up, allowing players to progress into progressively higher and higher tiers, each with their own unlocks. The players who buy early will get to skip part of that, getting the new toys earlier than other players, especially those who get to jump the line on launch day.
While it isn’t anything terribly mindblowing or game-breaking, the ability to use digital pre-orders to skip the line on some unlocks is a handy fringe benefit without making the game terribly unfair for players without the free skip perk of the pre-order.
For my part, I can’t help but feel a little bitter about the industry’s wider move to incentivize pre-purchase, pre-order, Early Access, bonus-content-for-retailer behaviors. While this doesn’t lock the players who didn’t pre-order out of content, it does still represent a mild disadvantage for players who buy before they can try. Informed decisions are always more difficult before information is actually available. However, for as little as I like this trend, it is rapidly becoming standard practice in the industry.
Players interested in Turtle Rock’s latest game can find more information on the official website, and can look forward to playing the game when it’s released on February 10th.
