Why has The Witcher 3 been delayed again?

Speaking to journalists in Poland, CD Projekt board member Adam Kiciński has explained the reason behind the game’s latest delay.

“Gamers took our decision very well. [The] market is afraid of badly polished games on next-gen platforms,” Kiciński told a financial reporter (thanks, Eurogamer). “We want to disarm the opinion that [The Witcher 3] doesn’t exist.

“It will be closed by the end of the year in line with the schedule.

“There’s a lot of small errors though, because the game is huge. It’s the only reason behind the delay. We didn’t assume it will be this big. Only after putting all the pieces together it turned out it’s bigger than the two first put together. Let me remind you: it’s open and not linear. We are just learning how to play it and we have to catch the little pieces. We know what to do, we just have to do it. We don’t want to release the game with bugs that undermine the gameplay.”

On Monday, the developer announced that The Witcher 3 would no longer release on its previously-scheduled window of February 2015, which itself was the result of another delay. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was initially poised to come out this past Autumn, and back in May, company co-founder Marcin Iwinski made a promise that there would be no further delays. That said, in a year that has seen a number of high-profile releases suffering from a litany of technical issues at launch, it’s likely that CD Projekt wanted to ensure that it didn’t find itself compared to the state of Assassin’s Creed Unity or Halo: The Master Chief Collection - both of which continue to suffer from problems.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, is as the name suggests, the third and supposedly final instalment in the fantasy RPG series. Set years after the last game, it follows an older Geralt of Rivia, the titular Witcher, as he attempts to piece together the mystery behind the events which led him to lose his memory at the start of the first game. While The Witcher has built its reputation on morally-ambiguous choices and non-linear gameplay, developer CD Projekt RED is taking that freedom to ambitious new heights with Wild Hunt. The explorable area is said to be an order of magnitude larger than that found in Skyrim, while sacrificing none of the depth that the series is known for. Last week, the developer also confirmed that the game would feature a second playable character - though stopped short of confirming their identity.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to release on Xbox One, PS4, PC on May 19th, 2015.
