Frozenbyte has showcased almost 10 minutes of gameplay from Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power.
Trine 3 looks even more beautiful than the last two games, sporting spectacular environments, highly colorful textures and that same wonderful music. The main change comes in the form of full 3D gameplay, no longer limiting you to two dimensions. Despite this change the core gamplay mechanics seem to be just as satisfying, with plenty of physics-based puzzles and platforming as you guide your characters through the main story - the strong, oafish knight, the dextrous, dart throwing rogue and the weak, platform-conjuring wizard.
The Trine series was something of a surprise success when the first game made its debut back in 2011. To date, the series has sold over 9m copies across various platforms, so it wasn’t surprising when a third game was announced late last month. What is interesting is that this sequel abandons the 2D gameplay which gave the original its accessible appeal. If Frozenbyte can pull off the switch then Trine 3 could turn out to be something very impressive indeed.
Trine 3 is set for release on PC sometime later this year, with other platforms expected to follow shortly afterward.
