Following the recent acquisition of popular game streaming site Twitch by Amazon for a reported $970 Million, the New York Times released a report detailing how the site’s peak viewership numbers now rival those of major cable networks. Specifically, Twitch’s daily viewership numbers now peaks at around 700,000 concurrent viewers - CNN, meanwhile, typically carries around 495,000 viewers.
Twitch.tv started back in 2011 as a spinoff from Justin.tv. The site’s popularity is such that in just two years it has doubled its membership rate, according to the Times’ statistics.
Even taken with a grain of salt - viewership statistics can sometimes be hard to accurately measure - the numbers are impressive, though still small when compared to other online video services like Youtube and Netflix. As the Times’ report points out, Twitch’s biggest rival now - at least among TV networks - is MTV, which typically sees around 773,000 viewers. Even then, Twitch’s viewership numbers have peaked at that number twice in this past summer.
