Total War: Attila Announced

If you’ve ever felt a strong desire to watch ancient Rome burn to the ground, you’re in luck. Sega and Creative assembly have put out a reveal trailer for the next installment in the Total War series, Total War: Attila, which was announced yesterday at the UK’s annual EGX event.

As the name suggests, the game is set in 395 AD, as the Roman Empire (er- okay, technically the Western and Eastern Roman Empires) is starting to crumble from within. Add to that a bunch of neighboring tribes banging at the gate to pick the city’s bones, and you can see why Attila marching his Huns west was a bit of a problem.

If previous games in the Total War series emphasized conquest and battlefield strategy, this time around, it’s all about getting out alive. “We want to push players to the limits of their skill to survive against the odds, and to love every minute of it,” project lead Janos Gaspar told Eurogamer.

Attila will feature the same mix of turn-based and real-time strategy we’ve come to know from the series. The developers are also touting new features such as street-fights, civilians, and dynamic fire. All those elements seem to suggest that Attila may be more a game of sacrifice and protecting civilians, than conquest and glory. For our take - it’s a fascinating time in ancient history, and one that often gets overlooked by the gaming industry at large. We’ll be curious to see how the new features play out.

We’ll also be featuring an interview with some of the development team behind Attila in the coming week - stay tuned as we’ll bring you more about the game’s features and development then.

Total War: Attila is set to be released sometime next year. Check out the announcement trailer below.
