Square Enix confirmed today that the sequel to the 3DS Final Fantasy-themed music-and-rhythm game Theatrhythm will be released in North America sometime in 2014. The news comes just before the Japanese launch of the game on April 24.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call takes over 200 songs from the years of Final Fantasy games, from titles dating back to the original Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, to the newest entries in the series such as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and the as-yet-unlocalized Final Fantasy Type Zero - a game that fans have taken to translating in lieu of Square Enix announcing a Western release.

Players are tasked with playing along to the rhythm and beat of recognizable battle, field, town and event themes using either stylus or button input. Producer Ichiro Hazama noted the importance of music to the Final Fantasy series, stating:

“As with the previous title, we wanted to shine the spotlight on that music for fans to re-experience their favorite moments from across the entire Final Fantasy catalogue.”

In addition, Square Enix also detailed key features of the game including:

  • Versus battle mode: Players can compete head to head against each other
  • Quest Medley Mode: Players choose their own route through short, medium and long quests which consist of playing along to Final Fantasy songs. Quests can be shared between players
  • Over 60 characters: Some appeared in the original Theatrhythm and others such as Zack (Crisis Core) and Benjamin (Mystic Quest) are new to Curtain Call
  • Collecta Crystarium: Clearing songs nets the player Collecta Cards which can be used to boost character stats

Curtain Call doesn’t have a specific release date at the moment, but we do know that it will retail for $39.99 and rated ‘T’ (Teen) by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Check back with us soon for coverage of the import version of Curtain Call later this week. In the meantime, here are some videos courtesy of Square Enix to whet your appetite.
