The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Will Get 2 “Massive” Single-Player Expansions After Launch

Geralt at a crossroads

In addition to the 16 pieces of free DLC that CD Projekt RED had announced for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt months ago, they’ve now announced that two story-centered expansion packs will launch for the game in the months following release. However, due to the size of these expansions, they will not be released free.

According to the press release, the two expansions are called Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The former promises a ten hour adventure in No Man’s Land, entangled in a web of deceit and uncertainty, and will cost $10. The latter expansion will add a new region to the game, Toussaint, and feature around 20 hours of gameplay for $20. Both can be purchased in an Expansion Pass for $25, and you can pre-order the pass now on Steam and gog.com.

Combined with the purported 200+ hours of content already announced, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is shaping up to be an enormous experience, so hopefully it should see us through the quiet summer months.

“We’ve said in the past that if we ever decide to release paid content, it will be vast in size and represent real value for the money,” said CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński. “Both our expansions offer more hours of gameplay than quite a few standalone games out there.”

Hearts of Stone is slated for release in October 2015, while Blood and Wine is slated for release in first quarter 2016 - though there is the chance that the expansions will get delayed, just as Wild Hunt did multiple times since its intended Fall 2014 release.

The Witcher 3 will conclude the story of the titular Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, as he seeks to discover the truth behind the Wild Hunt and save Ciri from falling victim to an ancient prophecy. The game world is fully open to explore, unlike previous installments in the series, and is said to be larger than that of Skyrim. As well as controlling Geralt, you’ll also play as Ciri in certain flashback sequences, filling in some of the game’s backstory and developing her character. The previous games were both excellent, and CD Projekt RED has a great history of post-release support, so we’re pretty excited to see what they have in store for Geralt’s swansong.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to launch on Xbox One, PS4, PC on May 19th. Players excited to visit whet their appetites can view the first 15 minutes of the Witcher 3 here.
