Upcoming first-person horror-adventure game The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is set for release on September 25 for PC, with the PlayStation 4 release coming sometime in 2015, developer The Astronauts has announced.
The game follows detective Paul Prospero as he searches for answers regarding the disappearance of a young boy called Ethan Carter. Prospero uses supernatural abilities to assist him as he investigates, which allow him to talk with the dead.
A 13-minute commented look at the gameplay has also been released. The video, which you can watch below, showcases how players interact with elements in the game, which Adrian Chmielarz’s narration explains will sometimes raise more questions than actually providing solid answers. It also displays how Prospero’s supernatural abilities will work, from the player sometimes having to use their own initiative to work out where an item is from a vision or tuning in with the deceased to unlock their most recent and vivid memories (although it is explained that the world must be how the dead remember it to be able to interact with them). Puzzle solving also lets the player build up a visualization of the crime, which plays out like a cut-scene in front of you.
Mini-worlds are also explained to be a feature within the game, which let the player do things from exploring an old building when it was in its prime or find traps in secluded areas of the world.
The video is obviously designed to not reveal too much about the key moments in the game and seems to bounce around here and there, but it still offers a great look into how the games mechanics will function and showcases the real beauty of the game.
