Sunset Overdrive, the Xbox One exclusive by Insomniac Games, is set to be a free download for all Xbox Live Gold subscribers tomorrow. The offer will unfortunately only last 24 hours as part of Microsoft’s celebrations for the Xbox One’s first anniversary according to Major Nelson, the figurehead for Xbox at Microsoft - but hey, it’s better than nothing!
Xbox Live Gold subscribers can download the free copy at 5:01 am UK time tomorrow (Saturday, November 22) and will be able to continue playing up until the same time on Sunday. Sunset Overdrive is a hefty 23.17 GB download though, and although you don’t need to have it all downloaded and installed to play, it’s probably a good idea to start the download as soon as possible so that you can make the most out of the 24 hours you have.
During your 24-hour romp you’ll be able to do everything someone with a proper copy would be able to do including unlocking Achievements and playing the game’s online multiplayer mode. Your progress will also be saved during the trial period so when it ends and if you decide to purchase the game, you should be able to carry on playing rom where you left off.
Xbox One owners curiously spotted 24-hour game unlocks on the dashboard back in August, and speculation that Microsoft had quietly begun testing these trials started roaming the internet. At the time though, Microsoft told Eurogamer that their listing on some console dashboards had appeared “in error”.
Maddy Richards reviewed Sunset Overdrive for Continue Play, scoring the game a respectable 7/10. “It’s great fun, but once you’ve heard all of the jokes a few times, you’re left with a vibrant world with solid if not spectacular gameplay,” Maddy said. “The light that burns brightest, burns half as long.”
