Street Fighter V Beta Postponed Indefinitely

Street Fighter V: Cammy fighting Ryu

Street Fighter V’s beta has been postponed indefinitely, Capcom has announced.

When Street Fighter V’s beta was launched last week, it wasn’t long before the whole thing came crashing down. Many players had problems even reaching the main menu, and while some reported they were able to practice against the game’s AI in training mode, it’s believed that not a single successful online match took place.

Capcom responded by taking the beta offline while it worked out the problems, promising that the botched test - one of three planned beta phases for the upcoming fighting game - wouldn’t count towards the total. Initially, the publisher stated that it hoped to resolve the issues relatively quickly. But now it appears that the problems have proved too complex to resolve in a short period of time, and so Capcom has taken the step of postponing the first phase of the beta to an unspecified date in the future.

“Capcom offers its sincerest apologies to everyone who participated in this first beta test,” the publisher wrote in a post on the Capcom Unity blog. “While the purpose of a beta is to work out these type of issues, it was very clear that the issues we faced were more severe than we were prepared for. After three days of testing, while we were making progress and collecting valuable data, we felt the majority of players were not having a good experience, and the best course of action would be to take the servers offline for extended maintenance. We will be postponing our first beta phase until we believe the experience is going to be a positive one for players.”

Capcom then gave further assurance that this failed beta phase won’t count towards the total allotted test phases: “To be clear, this first beta test attempt will not count toward our previously announced beta test allotments. There will still be at least three full beta tests prior to the game’s launch. So for those in the Americas that feel disappointed that they were not able to experience their pre-order incentive, there will be plenty of opportunities prior to launch to experience the game.”

The publisher also appears to have something special waiting in the wings for those who were affected by the beta’s issues last week. Details have yet to be announced, though Capcom has said that more information will be released over the coming weeks.
