Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Launches, is Immediately Funded

Shenmue_3

Fourteen years after Shenmue II, the final installment of the Shenmue trilogy is finally in the works. That’s right, Shenmue III is on Kickstarter right now.

Yu Suzuki, the producer and director responsible for Shenmue, started the Kickstarter campaign today, June 16th. When I opened the page to check the progress for the first time, the funding had already skyrocketed to $1,995,000. By the time I finished the first sentence of this article, it ticked over to meet its goal.

Although Sega spent a mind-boggling $70 million to produce the first Shenmue, the game was a financial flop, only selling 1.2 million copies. Shenmue II fixed many of the problems that players encounted in the first installment, but it wasn’t enough to save the Dreamcast from going under, which was probably a big reason we haven’t seen the third game until now.

But the sentiment is clear – As the funding counter continues to tick ever upward, it becomes ever more evident just how much people desire Shenmue III.

Shenmue III will be available for PC and PS4. The project’s current stretch goals include three additional areas that will be included in the game if they are met: Baisha ($4m), Choubu($?m), and Bailu Village($?m). Estimated delivery for the Digital Copy tier of the game ($29) is December 2017.

The Kickstarter video features Yu Suzuki talking about the Shenmue series and his discovery of Kickstarter, as well as a brief cutscene of Shenmue III. Check out the Kickstarter page if you’d like to donate to the project.
