Capcom has just announced that the original Resident Evil is once again getting a facelift, and this time it’s the getting the popular “Remastered” moniker as well.
Set for a late 2014/early 2015 launch on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Resident Evil Remastered is based on the 2002 Gamecube-exclusive Resident Evil (known informally as REmake/REbirth) port of the 1996 original. Bizarely, there is no Nintendo version slated.
This time around, Resident Evil is set to have upgraded resolutions, 1080p on next-gen consoles (720p on last-gen consoles), and a remastered soundtrack with 5.1 surround support. There will also be the option to play in either 16:9 widescreen, or the original 4:3 ratio for the purists out there. There’s also a scrolling camera which will soften the blow of playing under the original’s fixed-angle style, for the younger generation.
Likewise, the classic control scheme will be available for said purists, though a new, more modern alternate control scheme will also be available, bringing Resident Evil Remastered in line with modern control standards, taking advantage of the analogue stick at long, long last.
At present, there is no word on international pricing, though Japanese pricing has been set at 3990 yen in Japan. Last generation versions will be available before Christmas.
Here’s an announcement from the game’s producers, Tetsuya Kitabayashi and Yoshiaki Hirabyashi, discussing the game in Japanese.
