New Street Fighter V footage shown off, Capcom looking to the community for roster suggestions

At Taiwan’s Tappei games show this weekend, Capcom showed more of its upcoming PS4 and PC-exclusive sequel to the ridiculously popular fighting game series during an exhibition match between pro players Daigo (playing as Ryu) and GamerBee (playing Chun Li). GamerBee wins the match, but only through an utterly ridiculous amount of Soul Fist spamming that’s sure to raise an eyebrow among players. One fan recorded the match and uploaded it you Youtube (of course they did). You can watch that below.

While no new characters were on display, the new footage does show off more of the characters’ movesets. Particularly impressive is the animation, boasting a vast increase in the amount of frames over Street Fighter IV.

Street Fighter V doesn’t currently have a release date, but it’s expected to launch sometime later this year. The MT Framework engine used in Street Fighter IV has been dropped in favor of Epic’s new Unreal Engine 4, and Capcom appears to be taking a slightly more realistic approach to the game’s visuals this time out, instead of the cel-shaded, ink-blot-heavy style of its predecessor. Other than Ryu and Chun-Li, Charlie - appearing in playable form for the first time since Street Fighter Alpha 3 - is the only other character confirmed to be playable, though it’s a pretty safe bet that fan favorites E Honda, Blanka, Ken, Dhalsim, Zangief and others will make an appearance. Other than that, who knows? Street Fighter has accumulated a huge list of fighters over the years, with the Alpha series and Street Fighter Fighter 3 being responsible for a large influx of fresh faces. Could we maybe see the return of Zero or Necro?

Well, fans of those characters - and others - might be in luck. Speaking at the show, Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono said that the publisher is aiming to look to fans for suggestions about which cast members to include as development moves forward. However, Guile appears to have been ruled out as a combatant - Ono said that having both Guile and his mentor Charlie appearing on the roster in the same game wouldn’t make sense. Whether that’s because of story reasons, the two sharing similar movesets, or some other reason isn’t clear - he wouldn’t be drawn any further on the subject.
