ORIGINAL STORY
Azure Striker Gunvolt is the upcoming 3DS eShop title that’s the spiritual successor to the Megaman Zero style of gameplay, co-developed by Inti Creates and Comcept. Hitting the system later this year, Keiji Inafune has just dropped a Mighty bomb on the fans of the upcoming franchise.
Inafune’s been more vocal with the development of Mighty No. 9, his Megaman successor that’s headed to nearly every system under the sun after an amazingly successful Kickstarter (and has now received a new post-Kickstarter funding project to add even more content to the game), and this game’s received a bit more attention, if only for not being limited to the 3DS’ eShop.
In the vein of Mighty Final Fight, a comical NES port of Final Fight, Mighty Gunvolt has been announced as a standalone title, bringing Gunvolt concepts to NES era graphics and gameplay. In it, Gunvolt teams up with Mighty No. 9 himself, Beck, alongside a uniquely Japanese character, Ekoro, from the Japanese-only Gal*Gun franchise.
Inspired by the era and classic gameplay, Mighty Gunvolt will be a free download for those who purchase Azure Striker Gunvolt before November, according to Tiny Cartridge. While there has been no reveal of the title or distribution plans for America, it’s not unlikely that the title could see a similar situation in America. If not free, a cheap, separate title could be in the works. While Gal*Gun is a unique title (pretty girls, animé-stylized, shooting others in a high school setting), nothing in this 8-bit crossover reinterpretation seems out of question for American audiences.
