Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy III will be making its way to the PC via the Steam store. No specific release date has been given, but we were told it was “coming soon”. Final Fantasy III is notable for being the first Final Fantasy game to sell over a million copies, yet the original 1990 NES release was never localized. It wasn’t until 2007 that developer Matrix Software was commissioned to remake the game in 3D for the Nintendo DS - the remake also went on to sell over a million copies.
The remake version was then ported to iOS devices (iPad version pictured above) and it is this remake that will be appearing in an “enhanced” form on Steam. Sadly Square Enix hasn’t shared any screens from the PC version, but they did detail some of the enhancements, which include:
- New and improved 3D visuals and story sequences
- Quicker browsing through the monster bestiary and other game record
- New visual designs for the Job Mastery Cards
- Upgraded graphics
- Includes Achievements
- New feature of Steam Trading Cards
The “New” here likely refers to high-resolution versions of the assets found in the DS version of the game rather than brand new graphics, though the Achievements and Steam Trading Cards are unique to this edition.
Final Fantasy III follows the story of Luneth on his quest to restore the world’s Crystals. But it isn’t the only Final Fantasy to center around Crystals: they’re a recurring theme in the series, and the upcoming Final Fantasy XV’s plot appears to revolve around them, too.
