Bandai Namco has announced the first Dragonball game to appear on new generation consoles, Dragonball Xenoverse. The reveal trailer shows everything you would expect from a Dragonball game. That is to say, fights from the Dragonball Z anime that have already been re-enacted in videogame form to death. All the faces you’d expect are there: Goku, Vegeta, Nappa, Freiza and Majin Buu.
The one surprise comes at the end of the trailer. We see the back of a character watching a heated fight between Goku and Vegeta. His indigo jacket is adorned with a Capsule Corporation logo. If not for his red hair, series fans would immediately peg him as Vegeta’s son, Trunks.
A narrator chimes in: “A clock that once had stopped, will start to tick again”. We’re postulating that the timeline in the game extends beyond the end of Dragonball Z. The omission of the ‘Z’ in the game title supports this, as does the red hair, the mark of a Super Saiyan God. The Super Saiyan God may be unfamiliar to those how haven’t followed the series for some time; it’s a new part of canon that was recently established in the 2013 film Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods.
Dragonball Xenoverse is in development for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It’s being developed by Dimps, a studio staffed by ex-SNK employees currently working on the PS Vita exclusive Freedom Wars.
