With the new trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 released, Treyarch gives players some insight into the Dystopian futuristic setting in which the game is set.
Presenting itself in a documentary form, the “Ember” trailer below shows mankind’s technological improvements in both lifestyle and medicine within the span of 60 years. In a world where prosthetic limbs and cybernetic implants have become widespread phenomenon, the trailer shows the divide between augmented and the rest of society, and the controversies surrounding it. There’s even a thinly-veiled reference to infamous whistleblower Edward Snowden.
If you didn’t like the futuristic direction taken by last year’s Advanced Warfare, then tough - Call of Duty seems determined to occupy the sci-fi genre for a while yet.
A lot of people were quick to catch onto similarities to Deus Ex Human Revolution’s pre-release marketing and the new Black Ops teaser. Having been released in 2011, Eidos Montreal took a similar marketing approach with Human Revolution through its “Eyeborg” faux-documentary, which examined the melding of man and machine and advances in robotic prosthetics.
It seems that it wasn’t just the fans who noticed the similarities, either - Human Revolution‘s Art Director, Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, provided the following comment on twitter:
Hey @Treyarch, Adam Jensen says welcome on the bandwagon! The liquor bar is at the back 😉

And Square Enix Montreal put out its own tweet, this time using the official Deus Ex twitter account to post a cat meme:

Bless.
Human Revolution will, of course, be receiving a sequel of its own this year. Publisher Square Enix lifted the lid recently and announced Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, once again in development by Square Enix Montreal and featuring the return of Adam Jensen.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution‘s Eyeborg trailer can be viewed below, so you can see the similarities for yourself. Coincidence?
Call of Duty Black Ops 3 is due for an official reveal this Sunday, April 26th.
