Crytek, in a bid to place the company in a more stable position financially, has signed a pretty big licensing deal with a mystery firm.
Last year, Crytek went through some pretty public financial problems as it was struggling to pay off various staff members while simultaneously staying afloat financially. After a few rocky months (see here, here and here), the struggling developer finally decided to release a statement announcing that it had secured enough extra capital to carry on as a business - though they still had to close its Nottingham studio.
Crytek co-founder Faruk Yerli and Jens Schaefer, head of Public Relations, told Develop that instead of securing funding from an investor they had instead received the money from a fresh licensing deal that it had been working on for a “long time”. Yerli went on to call the deal “huge” and that it would significantly help put the firm back on track, but refused to reveal more.
“A lot of people are under the impression we had to find a new investor or something, but that wasn’t the case,” Shaefer said. “We made a licensing deal.”
Yerli chimed in to add: “It was a huge one, probably the biggest one. I can’t say anything more in detail, but hopefully we’ll be able to announce it with the partner soon.”
While Yerli and Schaefer wouldn’t fivulge specifics, they did say that they were hoping to reveal more about the deal sooner rather than later. Your guess is as good as ours what it could be, though given the technical grunt of CryEngine, we’re hoping for something suitably spectacular.
