Capcom now open to acquisition

Yesterday, it was announced that Capcom’s takeover defense was voted by the company’s shareholders to not return. This revoking of the defense, originally created in 2008 to prevent other businesses and individuals from purchasing the majority of Capcom’s stock, means that Capcom is now open to acquisition.

This does not automatically spell out anything grim for Capcom and its various intellectual properties - while Capcom’s business has not been stellar in the last few years, the company is still worth a large amount of money and acquiring more than half of its stock would be an enormous financial investment. Still, it should be noted that if any enterprise does choose to undergo that endeavor, they will obtain the rights to Capcom’s vault of trademark series - everything from Street Fighter to Resident Evil.

According to Capcom, “if there is any large-scale purchaser of Capcom stock… [the company] will take steps to ensure disclosure of the position of the board of directions and other information and that there is sufficient time for shareholders to examine the proposed large-scale purchase and reach a decision.” Essentially meaning that they will give shareholders sufficient notice and information to decide for themselves whether they think a buyout offer is a good idea or not prior to any sudden deals.

This is not the first time this year that a big video game company has opened themselves up to being bought out. Back in January, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said that he was considering “mergers and acquisitions” in response to the company’s recent financial troubles. Being a much wealthier company, acquisition of Nintendo is far less likely - but it will be worth watching what happens to both companies going forward.
