Broken Bat: Is Arkham Knight On PC FUBAR?

Broken Bat: Arkham Knight On PC Has A Few Issues

Batman: Arkham Knight has barely been released for 24 hours, but already a litany of problems with the PC version of the game has created a bit of a stink among some gamers.

Players on PC have complained about the fact that Arkham Knight on PC appears to be capped at 30 frames per second as opposed to 60. Moreover, the frame rate drops down to 10 fps or less when driving or gliding. Some people are having problems even getting the game to run in the first place.

None of this has been helped by the fact that publisher Warner Bros. quietly upgraded the minimum system requirements for the PC version on launch night - a move which didn’t go unnoticed, and has led to some PC gamers accusing the publisher of duplicity. Originally, the stated GPU requirements listed a Geforce GTX 660 as the baseline. In the revised specs, a Radeon HD 7950 (3 GB Memory Minimum) has been added.

The new requirements came with an acknowledgement that Rocksteady and Warner Bros. are aware of some performance issues for PC users using AMD graphic cards and that they were working to rectify the issue. “The minimum specs for Batman: Arkham Knight have been adjusted,” wrote Warner. Bros’ VP of Game Technology, Gary Lake-Schall, in an update on Steam.

“We also want to note that there are some known issues with the performance of Batman: Arkham Knight for PC owners using AMD graphics cards. We are working closely with AMD to rectify these issues as quickly as possible and will provide updates here as they become available.”

AMD card owners aren’t the only ones experiencing problems, however - many NVIDIA card owners have also reported significant performance issues, albeit seemingly not quite to the same extent.

“A single GTX 970 isn’t even enough to keep it at a stable 30fps, which is completely ludicrous. Warner Brothers should be ashamed of releasing a game like this,” wrote user Shadownet on Arkham Knight‘s store page on Steam; RAYven commented that “optimization is terrible, textures are weird, TitanX can’t maintain 60fps on 1080p”.

At the time of writing, Steam’s user ratings stand at “Mostly Negative”, based on 6,233 reviews. Arkham Knight had been listed as a featured game on Steam’s storefront, but has quietly been removed overnight.

On Rocksteady’s official forums, community manager CODA acknowledged the problems and said that the developer is working closely with a third party company to identify and resolve the issues. “We’re aware that some users are reporting performance issues with the PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight,” CODA wrote. “This is something that Rocksteady takes very seriously. We are working closely with our external PC development partner to make sure these issues get resolved as quickly as possible.”

Here’s hoping that Warner Bros. makes good on their promise and releases a patch in a timely manner - the previous game in the series, Batman: Arkham Origins (admittedly not developed by Rocksteady) was all but abandoned by the publisher, despite still suffering from severe technical problems on all platforms, including game-breaking bugs.

Our review of Arkham Knight should be published later this week, based on Xbox One retail code provided by the publisher. We’ll be following this story closely however, and will be sure to report on any significant developments.
