Blizzard has never-quite-announced their next generation MMO, code named Titan, but it has been cancelled according to Blizzard founder and CEO Mike Morhaime.
In an interview with Polygon, they explained that the fun and passion found in making Blizzard’s next MMO’s just wasn’t there with Titan, even after rebooting the project last year after nearly a decade of development. “The discipline of knowing when to quit is important,” Metzen said. “We were losing perspective and getting lost in the weeds a little. We had to allow ourselves to take that step back and reassess why the hell we were doing that thing in the first place.”
Titan joins StarCraft Ghost and Warcraft Adventures in games that the company has scrapped. The studio has called the move “excruciating”: “It’s always really, really hard to make those kind of decisions. It was hard when we canceled Warcraft Adventures. It was hard when we canceled StarCraft Ghost. But it has always resulted in better-quality work.”
In terms of working within the MMO genre again, Morhaime said that the idea wasn’t impossible. “I wouldn’t say no to ever doing an MMO again,” he explained. “But I can say that right now, that’s not where we want to be spending our time.” He did however clarify that Blizzard will continue to support World of Warcraft, with the hope of that being “forever”.
Blizzard is busy at the moment with their already successful free-to-play card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, which is a personal favorite here at Continue Play. They also have their first attempt at a MOBA, Heroes of the Storm that is entering its beta phase sometime soon, and with the latest World of Warcraft expansion - Warlords of Draenor - being released in November it doesn’t look like this developer is disappearing anytime soon.
