It’s fair to say that owners of Batman: Arkham Knight on PC have been hit by more than their deserved share of roadblocks over the past few weeks.
Released to widespread criticism before being “suspended” from sale by publisher Warner Bros. Interactive, the PC version of Rocksteady’s conclusion to its Batman trilogy was a mess. Despite missing many of the graphical effects of the console versions, being locked to 30 frames per second and lacking many of the most basic performance options, many players found themselves confronted with performance that saw the game plummeting to single-digit framerates in even relatively uneventful and empty sections, so bad was Killer Instinct developer Iron Galaxy’s port.
Now, even as Rocksteady works hard to get the PC version up to scratch (with assistance from NVidia, no less), it seems like Warner Bros is to continue playing the perennial Joker towards PC gamers - announcing the delay of Arkham Knight‘s first chunk of downloadable content, the mini-prequel campaign Batgirl: A Matter of Family.
What does this mean? Well, the obvious short-term answer is that the DLC won’t be available on PC at the same time as the console versions. More worringly, though, is that no alternative release date has been given.
Batgirl: A Matter of Family was originally due to launch alongside the Xbox One and PS4 versions for Season Pass holders from tomorrow, and as a separate DLC purchase availabile to all Arkham Knight owners from next week. But now it’s been put on the backburner until an unspecified point in the future.
“Our continued focus on getting the right PC fixes in place for the main game has had an impact on the development of all DLC content for the PC version of the game,” Warner Bros. explained in a statement issued on the game’s official forum.
In addition to the announcement, Warner Bros. has committed to sharing information about the ongoing efforts to fix the PC version, saying that it will have more to say on the matter soon. Perhaps more interestingly, the publisher says that it has revised its quality assurance review procedures for future PC games.
“We can also assure you that because of this latest launch, we are modifying the internal review process for all of our games,” the statement reads. “For those who are waiting for the updated version of the game on PC, please know that we are working on this every day. For the players who are continuing to play Batman: Arkham Knight on PC, fixes are continually being made to the game as we await the final updated version. ”
Dale was impressed by Arkham Knight when he reviewed the Xbox One version of the game, awarding it an “excellent” score of 9/10 - but found that the villain of the title was a missed opportunity, and was left unenthused about the implementation of the Batmobile. Still, overall he thoroughly enjoyed himself - even if he’s still trying to get over the shock of some of the game’s jumpscares [Bloody Man-Bat! - Ed].
“Rocksteady knows Batman. At times, it feels as though the developer understands the character so well that no one else will ever measure up,” Dale wrote in his Batman: Arkham Knight review. “Over the course of three games, the studio has set a benchmark so high that I feel sorry for any developer having to follow in their footsteps.”
