More than 7 million units of the PlayStation 4 have been sold to date, Sony has announced.
The console was released last November in most territories, though Sony’s homeland of Japan had to wait until February before they could purchase the system.
By way of comparison, reports suggest that Microsoft’s Xbox One is having selling much more slowly. The last official figure provided by the Redmond giant was that the system has sold 3.9 million worldwide as of January. Since then however, many retailers have discounted the price of the machine and Microsoft also released a special Titanfall bundle at a slightly lower price. It’s also worth bearing in mind that the Xbox has been released in far fewer territories than the PS4; the console has yet to be released in 8 countries. It will be interesting to see how the two compare once more recent sales data is released by Microsoft.
As well as enjoying healthy sales of the console itself, Sony also announced that software sales are strong, with 20.5 million games sold via retail and over PlayStation Network, with another 120 titles confirmed for release in 2014.
The machine’s social networking features have also proved popular, despite many gamers criticizing what they viewed as a move away from focusing on the core gaming demographic. Over 135 million shares have been captured using the new Share button on the controller, while 4.9 million gameplay sessions have been broadcast over services like Twitch and Ustream.
