Xbox One Gets Backwards Compatibility for 360 Games

On stage at the Microsoft Xbox E3 show, it’s been announced that the Xbox One is getting backward compatibility for select Xbox 360 titles, with more coming before the holidays.

Along with the announcement of backwards compatibility functioning, they’ve announced Xbox One features such as game streaming and Xbox Live will also be fully functional during 360 play. Games previously purchased and owned will likewise work, with previously purchased titles appearing for free on players’ Xbox Live accounts. Disc-based games will need to be downloaded.

On-stage, Mass Effect was featured, though no other games have been announced or confirmed yet.

It’s uncertain how many 360 games will make the full transition, as it was said on-stage that developers and publishers will be opting in as needed. Backwards compatibility will be released this holiday for everyone, and immediately for Xbox Preview members.
