Russian wrestler and series stalwart Zangief has been confirmed for Street Fighter V, Capcom has announced.
A few of Zangief’s new moves have been revealed, some of which you can see in action in the announcement trailer below. Zangief’s V Skill, Iron Muscle, enables the hairy behemoth to absorb a single attack. Meanwhile, holding down medium punch and medium kick and nudging the stick left or right will cause Zangief to advance slowly on his opponent. Release the attack buttons within striking distance, and Zangief will hit them with a manly flex of his muscles.
Zangief is the 13th playable character to be announced so far. 3 more characters have yet to be confirmed, but the absence of a couple of familiar faces on the confirmed roster so far means that we can likely fill in a couple of the blanks. Here’s the confirmed list:
- Birdie
- Cammy
- Chun-Li
- Karin
- Ken
- M. Bison
- Charlie Nash
- Necalli
- R. Mika
- Rashid
- Ryu
- Vega
- Zangief
Two prominent names - E. Honda and Blanka - are currently absent. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll both be on the roster, it would be unusual for a Street Fighter game to be released without them. Guile is also absent, though its arguable that his spot on the list could be occupied by Charlie Nash.
Of course, 16 is unlikely to be the final final list - Capcom has tradition of releasing updated versions of its games, that usually see a few more faces added.
In other Zangief-related news, here’s something you probably weren’t aware of: Zangief is Gay. Yes, really. Wes Copeland revealed a list of 5 LGBT characters in games a while back, containing a few names that might surprise you. For instance, did you know that Birdo from Super Mario Bros. is transgender? Well, now you do.
Take a look at Zangief in action in Street Fighter V below. Street Fighter V is currently planned for release on PC and PS4 during Spring 2016.
