This New Darth Vader Themed PS4 Is Ugly As Hell

At the D23 Expo this weekend, Sony announced a new Darth Vader-themed PS4.

A console based on everyone’s favorite Star Wars villain should be pretty cool. Sadly, this new PS4 variant - the latest in a long line of licensed special editions - isn’t getting much in the way of a positive response.

Aside from featuring Vader’s mug slapped large on one side of it, the console also features the Stars Logo etched along the top of the system. Unfortunately, if like most people you keep your PS4 in a horizontal position inside an entertainment unit, you’re not going to notice the difference. So it’s left to the accompanying themed DualShock 4 controller to stand out. And it certainly does, though not necessarily for the right reasons.

The controller’s design is inspired by the famous chesplate on Vader’s armor, which features an array of buttons and blinking lights. So the d-pad on the DS4 is red, as is the circle button. The other face buttons and the analogue sticks, meanwhile, are white. The left bumber is red, while the right bumper is blue; and the touchpad repeats the Star Wars logo etching found on the console:

Other than that, there’s nothing to make this latest PS4 design variant stand out, other than the fact that it’s the recently-announced 1TB version of the machine and that it comes bundled with a voucher for 4 classic downloadable Star Wars games. Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Jedi Starfighter and Star Wars Bounty Hunter are all included, presumably running via emulation.

Contrast this with the custom RT-D2 and C-3PO Xbox 360 which came out back in 2012 (left).

Aside from looking pretty damn cool, pressing the power button or ejecting the tray lead to the console responding with R2-D2’s trademark whistle. It also had the famous “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, You’re my only hope” quote from A New Hope hidden on the inside of the disc tray.

The new Darth Vader PS4 can be bought in two different bundles. The first bundles the 1TB console, controller and classic games with EA’s upcoming reboot of Star Wars Battlefront.

The second bundle comes with Disney Infinity 3.0, the game’s base station, the Rise Against the Empire Play Set Pack (featuring Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia figures as well as an in-game set piece) and a Boba Fett figure exclusive to the PS4 version of the game.

Both bundles will go on sale from November 17th for a limited time only - just in time for the cinema release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

What do you think of the new Darth Vader-themed PS4? Ugly monstrosity, or do you think we’re wrong and that the Force is strong in this one? Let us know.
