Gunjack, a new virtual reality arcade shooter, has been announced by Eve Online developer CCP Games. The game will be exclusive to Samsung’s Gear VR headset.
In Gunjack, players are put in control of a gun turret as mercenary for hire, tasked with defending the mining platform it’s attached to from “pirates, opportunists and anyone else looking to take what rightfully belongs to the company”.
Gunjack looks as though it will be an on-rails shooter, a genre we don’t see much of these days but which once dominated arcades up and down the land. Remember arcades? They were these big darkened rooms filled with game cabinets and a surly man in the corner who spat out change.
“Our goal was nothing less than creating the best game yet for the Gear VR headset,” said Jean-Charles Gaudechon, executive producer on Gunjack and studio manager at CCP Shanghai. “Our team has focused on delivering the most action-packed, graphically-stunning game possible on this new virtual reality platform.”.
The Samsung Gear VR is a virtual reality device developed by Samsung in collaboration with American virtual reality company, Oculus VR. The Rift is due to receive its official launch later this year, and Gunjack is set to be made available as a launch title for the device.
CCP has already been experimenting with VR prior to Gunjack. The company is also hard at work on Valkyrie, a space-based shooter set in the Eve universe and built for Oculus Rift and Sony’s Morpheus headset. Gunjack is also set in the Eve universe, making it the fourth game to take place there after online FPS Dust 514 debuted on PS3 in 2013 to mixed reception.
