A Fallout super-fan has has successfully pre-ordered Fallout 4 by sending over 2000 actual bottle caps to Bethesda.
The super-fan in question, known simply as Seth, posted pictures of his collected bottle caps on Imgur, along with a note stating that he had spent over 7.5 years saving bottle caps since he first started playing Fallout 3.
“I got pretty excited when I started to see more and more about Fallout 4,” Seth wrote, “I’ve also noticed you’re now accepting preorders. I only saw prices listed in pre-war dollars, and I wasn’t exactly sure what the exchange-rate is these days, so I went ahead and sent everything I’ve been able to save since I played Fallout 3 for the first time.”
Using his bathroom scale and a number he found on Wikipedia, he estimated that the amount of bottle caps needed was somewhere in the range of 2,240.
“I’m hoping if this post gets popular enough their PR department will be too nervous to turn me down,” he added in his original post.
Well, it seems his hope was justified. About a week later, Seth made a new post on imgur stating that he had received an email from Bethesda’s Community Manager, Matt Grandstaff, saying that the developer had decided to accept the payment of bottle caps - but only because he was the first one to attempt this clever stunt.
Grandstaff posted a picture of the package on his twitter feed, and then gave Seth recognition for his ingenuity:

@gwilburn @Bethblog for being first, he deserves the recognition. 🙂

Seth expressed his gratitude towards everyone who helped to make his stunt a reality, as well as thanking a fellow imgur user who had offered to buy him a copy of the game if Bethesda turned him down.
Fallout 4 was confirmed earlier this month with a new teaser trailer on Bethesda’s website. Additionally, Bethesda showcased a massive gameplay demo at their press conference at E3. The latest installment in the post-apocalyptic RPG franchise is currently planned to hit retail on 10th November for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
