Upcoming horror game Kholat, developed by IMGN.PRO, has been confirmed to launch on the 9th of June for PC and Mac via Steam.
Along with this confirmation, a shiny new trailer has also been revealed, narrated by none other than Sean Bean himself (Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Sharpe). Thankfully, with his penchant for dying in almost everything, I can confrim that he doesn’t get beheaded, shot or bumped off in any other way during the trailer.
Kholat was delayed back in March so that IMGN.PRO could give it a fine coat of polish. After watching the new trailer, it certainly seems to have beautiful visuals and an unsettling atmosphere. Gameplay wise, it’s not totally clear how Kholat will play. It looks like it could be somewhere between Dear Esther and Penumbra (at least the snowy parts anyway). It has been confirmed that there’ll be some ghosties to avoid, but the focus is more on environmental storytelling.
For those who didn’t know, like me, Kholat is inspired by a real life event. The Dyatlov Pass incident involved the deaths of 9 skiers who were found with mysterious injuries like cracked skulls and broken ribs, despite there being no sign of a struggle. Their tents were also slashed open from the inside, as if they were trying to escape from something. It was finally ruled that an “unknown compelling force” caused the skiers to flee to their deaths.
If that story hasn’t creeped you out too much, then take a gander at the new trailer for Kholat below (I keep expecting Sean Bean to say “One does not simply ski in Dyatlov Pass”).
