New details have emerged about What Remains of Edith Finch, including screenshots and a brand new trailer.
Developed by Giant Sparrow (who brought us the glorious weirdness of The Unfinished Swan), What Remains of Edith Finch was announced at Sony’s Playstation Event last December and has been in development these last 6 months.
You’ll be given control of Edith as she explores the Finch home and discovers the fate of all who lived there. As much as this may look like a horror game, we’re being assured that it isn’t. When describing What Remains of Edith Finch, Ian Dallas (Creative Director at Giant Sparrow) stated that “It may sound like a horror game but it isn’t. And by that I mean it’s not a game that’s designed to scare people. Instead, we wanted to make something that feels like looking up at the night sky and being simultaneously amazed by the majesty of the universe and humbled by how fragile and short your own life is.”
“It’s hard to sum up the game in a screenshot because the game is a collection of short stories. Each of those stories is about the death of a different Finch family member and each is meant to look and feel different from the others, the way no two people in any family are alike”, Dallas continued in his latest blog post.
“Which is why to start with we’re focusing a lot on the Finch family house where the game begins. As Edith, players will be exploring this house and eventually unlocking bedrooms for all the various family members. Inside each bedroom is something that tells a story about that person’s life (like a diary, or a collection of photos, etc).”
What Remains of Edith Finch is set to release sometime in 2016, exclusively for PS4. A demo for the beginning of the game will also be presented at E3 this year. In the meantime, take a gander at the new trailer and screenshots below.
