Activision has updated Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 with what looks like a teaser for Black Ops 3.
YouTuber Drift0r released a video after spotting suspicious in-game symbols on the advertisements in Black Ops 2 multiplayer maps Plaza and Express. The video, below, shows how the symbol for snapchat, - a cartoon-like ghost - has appeared on several of the advertisement posters in those two maps. When the symbol of the ghost is scanned into Snapchat it links to the official Call of Duty snapchat account.
On the Snapchat account there is a short video that begins with an eye closing and follows with the sun shining through a forested area and a voiceover saying “listen only to the sound of my voice”:
This very cryptic update is reminiscent of the covert theme in the Black Ops series and many believe that this is the beginning of a viral advertisement campaign to promote the game.
The traditional Call of Duty release cycle suggests that the next game in Activision’s juggernaut franchise is set to be announced sometime around this time of year, with a campaign trailer due at E3 in June during the Microsoft press conference. Following Sledgehammer’s Advanced Warfare last year and Infinity Ward’s Ghosts in 2013, it follows that it’s now Treyarch’s turn to develop the next game in the franchise. All of this seems to point to Black Ops 3 possibly being announced sometime in the near future.
Nic Bunce reviewed the last Call of Duty game, Advanced Warfare, saying that Sledgehammer’s franchise debut is a solid, if uninspiring, entry and awarding the game a score of 7/10.
“Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is certainly a step in the right direction for the series, but even despite the shift to full-blown sci-fi and the additions made to the multiplayer, it plays things a bit too safe,” Nic wrote in his Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Review. “That’s sure to be fine for most fans who simply want – and expect – more of the same; but I can’t help but think that, moving forward, the series needs to come up with some more drastic changes to the formula if it wants to maintain its position as the pre-eminent videogame release of the year.”
