Best-selling PlayStation 3 game God of War 3 is coming to PlayStation 4 in a remastered release, Sony has announced.
Sony Computer Entertainment announced the news alongside the 10th anniversary celebration of the God of War series, with the promise that the game will run at 60 frames per second, with an upgrade to 1080p in visual resolution.
The remastered version is also set to include all of the downloadable content from the original PlayStation 3 version, along with an additional photo mode, acting in a similar manner to a screenshot addition, which promises players a “wealth of creative camera and lighting options, allowing them to freeze, edit, and share photos of all of Kratos’ bloodthirsty exploits.”
Sony also added that the remaster will be lit up by “thousands of dynamic lights”, as well as featuring over four times the texture resolution of its PlayStation 3 counterpart.
In a post published on the PlayStation blog, Cory Barlog, Creative Director at Sony’s Santa Monica Studio, congratulated God of War on its 10th birthday, followed by:
“Should we toast to another ten years? Will there be another ten years?
“Hmm…”
Is this a suggestion that there’s more to come from the God of War series beyond God of War 3 Remastered? Only time will tell.

Anthony McDonald wrote about God of War 3 as one of his defining moments back last July, and why it was one of his personal gaming highlights. He wrote, “God of War III took the high bar set by its predecessor and raised it even further, using the power of the PlayStation 3 to take the series’ trademark scale and spectacle to ridiculous new heights.” We now get to see if the even-further advanced tech of the PlayStation 4 pays off for the franchise; however, is a remastered version of God of War 3 a necessary investment? Either way, the game sold nearly 5.2 million copies, making it the best-selling God of War game to date, so this version is sure to do Sony some good, at least.
God of War 3 Remastered is set for release on PlayStation 4 on July 14th in the US, and July 17th in the UK.
