Torchlight - the rather excellent action-RPG from Runic games - is currently free on Arc until Sunday. In addition, Torchlight 2 is currently 75% off - just $5.00, as opposed to its regular retail price of $19.99.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, Torchlight is a rather spiffing game in same vein as Blizzard’s Diablo. In fact, some of the development team actually came from Blizzard North - so they kind of know what they’re doing. As is usual for the genre, Torchlight a top-down RPG where you basically click on things until they explode, hoover up loot, and click on even more things with bigger stats - and then hoover up their loot. It’s a great big cycle of addiction, and it’s fantastic.
David Ochart reviewed Torchlight 2 back in February for Continue Play and gave it a not-too-shabby score of 9/10. “Torchlight 2 never slows down,” he wrote. “Though the story doesn’t stand out, it doesn’t need to; this game is all about the relentless, fast-paced fun.”
Arc is a digital distribution platform owned by Perfect World, a publisher originally based in Beijing but now operating across the world. As well as owning a majority stake in Runic since 2009, in 2011 the publisher also paid a not-inconsiderable sum of $50m+ to Atari in order to acquire Cryptic Studios - developer of the rather popular Lord of the Rings Online and the Dungeons & Dragons MMO Neverwinter (not to be confused with Neverwinter Nights, the classic Bioware RPG).
