Google has announced an Android TV device, the Nexus Player.
The Nexus Player is streaming device created within a partnership between Google and Asus. When it’s released, it will allow you to watch movies, videos and play music from your iOS, Android or Chrome device using Google Cast. The device will also allow you to play Android games straight onto your television, using a specifically designed gamepad. It will be the first device to utilize Google’s Android TV platform.
Pre-orders will be available for the product from October 17th and will begin shipping on November 3rd. There’s no news yet on the price.
There’s no massive difference in appearance between the slim puck-shaped device and its rival, Apple TV. It includes a voice-activated remote control, which comes with the console and there’s an option to purchase an additional game-pad if the intended use of the Nexus is to partake in games. Streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube will also be available to the user and any content on another device can be streamed through the Nexus player on to your TV screen. Multiplayer gaming is also a possibility and all achievements gained and progress made during a game will be shared between any devices which have the game available for playing. The Nexus player boasts a 1.8GHz Quad Core Intel Atom Processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of on-board storage. It also contains Wi-Fi capabilities and an HDMI output.
The Android game streamer was announced via a blog post, along with the Nexus 6 smartphone, the Nexus 9 tablet and the Android 5.0 “Lollipop” update, which will be the first to include the new design paradigm called “Material”, which was first announced at the Google I/O developer conference in summer.
