Ubisoft’s puzzle-war adventure game Valiant Hearts: The Great War has been released on iOS devices. We’ve written quite extensively on Valiant Hearts before, so we’re pleased that there’s now one more way to experience life on the western front.
Valiant Hearts follows the lives of 4 strangers and their quest to return one of their number (a young German soldier) to his French wife. Along the way, their stories are stitched together by a determined trench dog, who aides the player in solving complex puzzles. Though the game features a cel-shaded artstyle, the developers spent years painstakingly researching the events depicted in the game, and historical notes and photographs are scattered throughout.
The new iOS edition (the game was originally released for Microsoft and Sony consoles, and Windows back in June) brings a few new features to the table. Aside from touch control, the game now takes a screenshot if you hit pause, with the option of sharing it to Facebook. There’s also support for the Apple Games Center, which lets you track progress and unlock achievements.
If you don’t mind playing Valiant Hearts on your iPhone or iPad, it’s actually remarkably good value - the PS4 and Xbox One console versions both retail for $14.99, while the iOS app is only $4.99, but it’s only compatible with the iPhone 4S and later, iPad 2 or later, and at least a 5th generation iPod Touch - so make sure you can run the game before laying down your cash.
