Alone in the Dark: Illumination first screens and trailer

First announced late last week by Atari, there’s a new Alone in the Dark game in development, and now we have our first glimpse at screenshots and a teaser trailer.

The new game is a “re-imagined” version of the 1992 original, rather than a continuation of the 2008 reboot, which was released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC to lukewarm reception. A developer called Pure FPS is at the helm, though we can’t even find a web page for the studio, let alone their previous development history. Alone in the Dark was one of the nascent entries in what would become later known as the survival horror genre. Players took the role of Edward Carnby in the 1920s, as he investigated a mansion populated with the undead. Alone in the Dark pre-dated Resident Evil in its use of fixed camera angles and tank-style controls, though it was far more puzzle-based than Capcom’s series with a story which too more of an occult angle than Resident Evil‘s approach of science-gone-wrong.

The reboot will feature co-op multiplayer with players able to take the role of several different classes. The screenshots show a third-person perspective and a more action-oriented approach, alongside more industrial environments. “To survive, players must fight through challenging missions and dynamic environments filled with blood-thirsty beasts in order to rid an abandoned town of its mysterious curse of Darkness”, the press release reads. “Free fellow playable hero characters including the Hunter, Witch, Engineer and Priest – each armed with a unique set of special abilities and weapons.”
