Phew!
We have to admit, when we first announced our Wildstar Online fan art competition at the end of July, we weren’t expecting quite as many submissions as we ended up receiving. For those that don’t remember, we challenged readers to come up with an original character existing in the Wildstar universe, with copies of the game, game time and merchandise up for grabs.
In the end, it’s taken us longer than expected to sort through everything that was sent our way and come to our final decision (sorry!); but after much debate we’ve finally settled on the winners. Without further ado, here are the results!
1st Place
This stunning creation from Logan Davis made our jaws hit the floor when it dropped into our inbox.
“Meet Marro Oxi,” Logan said in his submission. “He’s a mysterious wandering spell slinger who used to be a string player, wandering from bar to bar all over Nexus. But, after being mistaken for somebody else, Marro was caught in a gun fight that left his right hand permanently damaged and the woman he loved dead. He spent weeks searching for the scum that put out the hit that got his woman gunned down. He finally found a bar owned by another Chua named Buxo. Buxo is his mark. A gunfight erupts and Marro manages to kill every goon in the place, but not before getting wounded himself and losing Buxo. Marro was taken in by a mysterious woman who tended to his wounds and nursed him back. Marro asks for her help in finding Buxo again and ending it once and for all. But, they get ambushed by Buxo’s men first. Marro and his new lady friend manage to fight their way out of the ambush, killing all of Buxo’s men. Marro has his chance to gun down Buxo once and for all, but he doesn’t take it. Buxo escapes once more….
Why did Marro hesitate? Who is the mysterious woman? What’s Marro Oxi’s next move?”
Well done, Logan - for the talent and work that went into your entry, you win the top prize: a Digital Deluxe copy of Wildstar Online, 6 months of game time and a Rowsdower plushie.
2nd Place
Chris Darby sent in Rusty Goldtooth, a Relic Prospector. We really liked this entry thanks to its humor and fitting effortlessly in with the Sci-Fi meets Wild West theme of Wildstar. We were also struck by how professional the design is. Honestly, Rusty could have stepped right out of a Disney animated film.
Chris introduced Rusty in-character as well, which gained him extra points. “Rusty is one wiley old coot of an exile! He’s been to every corner of the galaxy, risking life and limb (the ones that are left anyway) in the search of eldan artifacts. When he first heard the news about Nexus, he grabbed his trusty plasma shotgun, Big Tess, and hopped the first ship outa Dodge to seek his fortune. Feet on the ground and Big Tess in hand, Rusty ain’t gonna let no rootin’ tootin’ dominian varmint poach his claim!”
Well done Chris, you’ve bagged yourself a digital deluxe copy of Wildstar and a special Wildstar real-life hat!
3rd Place
3rd prize goes to Dennys Castillo, who sent in a picture of Donna the Explorer, an Aurin Spellslinger.
“Donna is a happy and optimistic Aurin who loves to explore,” Dennys told us (we’ve tidied up some of the typos). “Since little, she had a bad sense of direction but that is not stopping her from going on an adventure… the best explorer in all Nexus, she is determined to find out all the secrets of the planet.”
We like the bright colors in Dennys’ piece, as well the pastel/watercolor effect applied to the art. We also liked the Rosdower peeking over her shoulder in the background. Well done, Dennys - you win a standard digital copy of Wildstar!
Runners-up
That might be it for the prizewinners, but we received plenty of other entries too, many of which very nearly made it into the final selection. Here’s a few of our favorites (click on the image to see the full-size version).
Jack Stover came up with a Chua called Trash TeeVee, a literal fat-cat and media mongul.
Trash is described as using his power over the media to distort and suppress the truth in order to help the Dominion maintain its iron grip, while his hobbies include “smoking cigars in non-smoking areas, tax evasion, narcissism, and floating around on a luxury hover-couch because walking is for poor people”.
Of course, he also enjoys cat-naps.
We liked Trash for a few reasons. Firstly, the amount of detail that Jack put into his submmission - check our some of the writing on the equipment surrounding him - and the sketchy, cartoon style reminded us of newspaper political cartoons. In addition, a number of us here at Continue Play are comic fans, and Trash reminded us a lot of X-men villain Mojo, another massively obese media mogul who uses his control to maintain an iron grip.
Next, there was Geoger Dreamer ‘s submission. While we liked his submission a lot - it was a toss-up between this and 3rd-prizewinner Donna the Explorer, with which it shares some similarities - we ultimately felt that the bolder use of color in Dennys’ Castillo’s entry pipped it, and unfortunately Geoger didn’t attach much in the way of character background with his submission, or even a name for his creation. All we know is that he’s a “Granok warrior exploring the highest regions of Nexus”. Oh, and apparently the Rosdower at the top of that mountain “still doesn’t care”.
As much as we liked this piece, it just lacked a couple of things to push it past the finishing line.
Meanwhile, Victoria Perkins submitted Lyrrah. We liked this piece for a few reasons - the clean lines and cheerful character design, the composition of the image, and the amount of lore included in Lyrrah’s background (which you can read in the image itself). But unfortunately it wasn’t quite strong enough to reach the top 3. Still, it’s a cracking effort and Victoria should be really pleased with her work.
We received a lot more entries, but to show them all would take us all day, and we have plenty more adventures in Nexus awaiting us.
Congratulations to the winners - you’ll be contacted by email soon about your prizes - and well done to everyone else who took part. You really outdid yourselves with this competition, showing just how passionate so many people are about WildStar Online, and although not everyone is ultimately able to be a winner, we enjoyed going over each and every submission.
Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter and subscribe to our RSS feed to be kept up to date with future competitions and WildStar news and features, and thanks again to everyone who took part! This was the first time we’ve run a competition of this nature, but your passion and commitment helped to make it a resounding success.
That’s how we do it on Nexus, Cupcake!
