Yesterday, we reported that Street Fighter creator Capcom had launched a lawsuit against Dynasty Warriors developer/publisher Koei Tecmo. Today, Koei has responded to the allegations in a statement to Eurogamer.
“It is true that Capcom has filed a suit against Koei Tecmo. However we hold that there has been no copyright infringement of IP and patents held by Capcom and believe that this claim has no merit as will be proven through legal proceedings,” a spokesperson told them.
The lawsuit revolves around claims by Capcom that Koei infringed two of its patents in over 50 games between now and 2002. The patents in question involve technology which “adds additional content by combining a new piece of software to an already existing game” - effectively, downloadable content - and another patent which covers the player’s controller vibrating when an enemy is nearby.
If Capcom is successful, it could have far-reaching implications for the industry. Downloadable content is now used by most publishers in some form or another, either to expand existing content or as a method of giving exclusive content to players who purchase a game from specific retailers.
