Fans of Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda series have reacted to the news of Robin Williams’ death by creating a petition through change.org to have the late actor memorialized in a future game.

“Please consider naming an NPC in the new Legend of Zelda game after Robin Williams. It was a series he loved, and it’s a small tribute to a great man,” the petition reads.

The petition quickly gathered over 100,000 signatures, prompting a response from Nintendo, though one that is characteristically non-committal.

“Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo. Our hearts go out to his entire family, and especially to Zelda Williams who we’ve worked with multiple times. We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community, and hear the request of fans to honor him in a future game. We will not be discussing what might be possible for future games during this difficult time, but we will hold our memories of Robin close.”

The popular comedian and actor was a well-publicized fan of the Zelda games, going so far as to name his daughter Zelda after the titular princess of Nintendo’s long-running game series. Zelda Williams’ work with Nintendo mentioned in the response includes an ad both Mr. Williams and his daughter appeared in to promote The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time 3D. In the ad, Mr. Williams quips that he’s mixing his daughter up with the Princess because “You’re both pretty magical.”

A touching sentiment, from a man who created and gave so much.
