“In the spotlight, on stage!”
Those were the words uttered when Kouta Kazuraba used his Orange Lockseed in his Sengoku Driver to transform into the titular star of the show, Kamen Rider Gaim.
Sound like a whole different language? It’s actually not too far off from something you know well in America.
Kamen Rider is a 40+ year franchise of transforming superheroes, and the sister show (and predecessor) to Super Sentai, what most of the world knows as Power Rangers. While most of the Super Sentai heroes are teams of 3-5 spandexed warriors that use giant robots to their advantage, the Kamen Riders are armored loners that take to two-wheeled bikes (hence, “Riders”). The cast and plot change each year, but loose connections between one another (and between the sibling shows) keep things interesting. The newest incarnation of the franchise, Kamen Rider Drive, looks to be mixing things up with a car theme in September, but the actual design has largely been kept secret.
Scans for Kamen Rider SummonRide have kept this trend, focusing on the current and past heroes for this game, coming out for the Wii U and PlayStation 3 in Japan, that takes a Skylanders/ Disney Infinity/ Amiibo look at gameplay. Collectible figures of the Riders will unlock new gameplay elements in the title, with each Rider having their own elemental theme (one example, from Nintendo Everything, is that Kamen Rider Hibiki will be themed around fire, given his constant fire-themed attacks in the show).
It’s unclear, but it’s also teased that these figures will be compatible with Kamen Rider: Battride War II, the recently-released Dynasty Warriors-inspired title which was likewise released on the Wii U and PlayStation 3.
At the moment, it’s unclear what type of game SummonRide will be, but sadly it’s highly unlikely that it’ll reach non-Japanese countries. Previous attempts to bring it over to America, such as Saban’s Masked Rider and Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight failed, even if the latter gained two titles for Nintendo consoles and the Sega CD had an FMV adventure back in the old days.
