2K Games has announced that the first BioShock is due to be ported to iPhone and iPad at a premium price with no added micro-transactions. The re-release, which currently has no set release date, will be playable on the iPad 4, iPad Mini 2 and iPad Air, plus iPhone 5, 5S and 5C thanks to Havok’s cross-platform toolset. This ends the speculation around this twitter post which cleverly refers to the port to Apple products through a BioShock artwork which features the words “Come bite the Apple!”.
BioShock is a critically acclaimed videogame from the previous generation and 2K is assuring fans that the original game’s quality is still intact and all that has been changed is the addition of Touch-optimized controls and the inclusion of iPhone game controller support.
Eurogamer, who had an hour’s worth of hands on time with the BioShock iOS, stated that it was: ” a remarkably faithful version of the game, albeit shrunken down for smaller screens. The original game is all there, although with some compromises on how it looks.”
We took a retrospective look at Bioshock earlier this year, scoring it 9/10. “Rapture is a rich world, steeped in history and with a cast of characters that stick in the mind long after completion,” Nic said. “It’s also a game that will make you stop and think about the conventions of the medium; it’s a rare thing – a shooter with brains – and while it doesn’t always manage to live up to its own ambitions in the gameplay department, the writing is second to none.”
Here’s some screens of the iOS version to tide you over while you wait.
