The new installment in the mighty Doom franchise has been given some more details during the reveal event at QuakeCon and will simply be named Doon. Doom 4/Doom was first teased at E3 this year with a short minute-long cinematic trailer which can be seen below.
But QuakeCon attendees have seen something much cooler: a 20 minute gameplay demo that Bethesda has yet to release online. While we weren’t able to attend the event, IGN put up some impressions of the footage, and it sounds pretty great. Doom executive producer Marty Stratton has stated that the new game will be returning to the franchise’s roots and will feature “over-the-top demonic enemies, huge and inventive weapons which you can carry all at the same time” as well as “quick combat, free of regenerating health.” id has stated that they’re “committed” to a 1080p/60fps experience on all platforms thanks to their new id Tech 6 engine, though that remains to be seen.
Noted features from the footage include classic franchise enemies and weapons, double-jumping, bloody executions, clips that never need reloading, and battles against multiple enemies at once. Polygon noted that there are new puzzle mechanics involved with the gore as well, including a moment where the player uses a severed limb to unlock a keypad. All told, it definitely seems like a departure from what we saw with Doom 3 and a return to what made the franchise memorable in the first place, as befitting of a game with no numbers or subtitles.
There’s no word on Doom‘s release date or the beta access promised to those who preordered Wolfenstein: The New Order, but that information will hopefully be announced sooner rather than later.
