As some of you will know by now, Team 17 recently became a publisher. Their first Indie Partnership Title, Light, has finally been released.
Light is available as of today on Steam on PC, Mac and Linux machines. This super-minimalistic game was created by a single pair of UK-based developers known as Just a Pixel; in order to promote the release, the pair has decided to cut the normal asking price of $12.99 (£9.99/11,99 €) by 30% for the first week.
In Light, you start the game waking up in a strange yet familiar location. It’s immediately clear that something’s gone very, very wrong as you have no idea who you are, where you are or what happened to you. You probably have a headache too.
Light is a stealth game with a big emphasis on - as the title suggests - light as a gameplay mechanic. It’s not only a tool by which you know if an enemy can see you, but is a strong narritive focus, too. With it’s lo-fi neon aesthetic, the game recalls titles such as Project Endzone and Monaco, while gameplay feels something between a top-down mash-up of Metal Gear Solid and Hitman. Guards can be incapacitated and shoved in closets and you can steal disguises and hack into terminals and security systems - all the while attempting to avoid the suspicions of the guards wandering around each stage. Remember kids: Subterfuge first, violence second!
You can watch the trailer below. Having spent some hands-on time with it during development, we can say it’s certainly an interesting title which mixes plenty of new ideas with established stealth gameplay and an intriguing narrative.
