Watch Dogs has sold 8 million copies

Watch Dogs has apparently sold over 8 million units, according to Ubisoft’s quarterly financial report that was released today.

This number includes the copies that it shipped to retail outlets rather than just the specific number of copies sold to consumers, or copies sold over digital outlets such as Steam or Ubisoft’s own Uplay service. Either way it still gives us a good idea about how much demand the game is generating.

CEO and co-founder of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot, said the following, “Watch Dogs is now well positioned as a major franchise and we will be able to replicate and build on its success in the coming years. Its sales performance testifies to Ubisoft’s expertise as a creator of blockbuster brands.” Clearly Ubisoft is satisfied with Watch Dogs’ sales performance.

Ubisoft’s total sales revenue this quarter has come up to €360 million, 16 percent more than the number predicted (€310 million), this is miles better than the €76 million it earned for the same quarter last year (374 percent to be exact). Ubisoft also noted that over half of its revenue came from PS4 and Xbox One sales.

Although Ubisoft has had an undoubtedly fruitful last quarter, they aren’t expecting to do as well with the quarter to come, saying that they have estimated sales to come to €85 million - a 61 per cent decrease from before. Why? Ubisoft says that it is because last year’s release period gave us Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Rayman Legends and Just Dance 2014. The publisher’s upcoming games are Assassin’s Creed: Unity, The Crew, The Division, Far Cry 4, Just Dance Now and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, which aren’t due for quite a while.

We enjoyed our time with Watch Dogs, though it’s not without issues. Scoring it 7/10, we stated that “at times the story can be weak and it does little to distinguish itself from an increasingly large crowd of similar titles. But we still enjoyed the game and what it had to offer us, and there are flashes of brilliance which hint at potential the franchise has yet to realize. Even though it may be a little rough around the edges, taken in isolation it’s a perfectly enjoyable – and occasionally hugely entertaining – slice of open-world action. But don’t expect it to be anything new or marvelous, because you may be let down terribly.”
