If you’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of Epic Games’ Fortnite since it’s reveal in 2011, you’re in luck. The wacky shooter-meets-fortress defense has been delayed time and again, but now at least we have a better idea of what the gameplay entails. From what we’ve seen, think of it as a cross between Team Fortress 2 and Minecraft. You and your team mates wander the deserted countryside by day, collecting supplies and constructing a fortress complete with booby traps and surprises. When night falls, hordes of zombies and monsters do their best to tear your creation to the ground.
Fortnite looks to take more inspiration from something like Plants vs. Zombies than gritty survivalist games like The Walking Dead or Left 4 Dead. That said, if the gameplay trailer is any indication, defending your turf against the horde should be pretty furious. Players get all manner of weapons, from humble assault rifles, to power-wielding battle axes (which bear a striking resemblance mechanics-wise to Halo 3’s Gravity Hammer). This is all running on Epic Games’ Unreal 4 engine, so the comic-type visuals look pretty good already. Judging by the tech demos we’ve seen of the Unreal 4 engine in action, the finished game could be glorious when it’s finally released.
If like us, you can’t wait to get your fix of Fortnite, Epic Games is offering access to an Alpha cut of the game to work out bugs. You can sign up on their website.
We’re excited to see how Fortnite turns out. Check back to see more in the coming months. In the meantime, checkout the new trailer for yourself.
