The World Ends With You - On Android now

The World Ends With You Feature

The hi-res remake of the 2008 DS ARPG The World Ends With You is out now for PAL territory Android devices, under the name The World Ends With You: Solo Remix. The game has been available available on iOS devices as of 2012, but has only now become available on the Google Play store.

The story remains the same as the original game: A boy named Neku wakes up in the middle of Tokyo’s bustling downtown Shibuya area with no recollection of how he got there. He’s then forced into a life-and-death situation where a mysterious riddlemaster tasks him with clearing various missions.

The original release stood thanks to its hip-hop culture-inspired stylings and rhythmic action-based battle system. This latest version includes a 60-track “high quality” soundtrack with full vocals. Some of these are new remixed versions of songs. Both the original and new tracks are the work of Takeharu Ishimoto, who is notable for his work on various Kingdom Hearts games and Final Fantasy Type Zero (which has been confirmed for a HD re-release) amongst others.

Contrary to the game’s title, this version of The World Ends With You actually extends to other players through social networking features. The avatars of players you’ve exchanged profiles with will appear in game. If the avatar’s source player has linked their Twitter account their avatars will think their latest tweet. Social trading is encouraged, as each trade nets players a free item.

The World Ends With You: Solo Remix is being priced at £12.99 / €15.99 on the Google Play Store. Square Enix claims that the graphics have been “redrawn” for this release, something that the quality of the sprite work in these screenshots attests to. Take a look for yourself.
