It was only last week that we heard publishing giant Square Enix had abandoned bringing their long awaited localization of Final Fantasy Type Zero to the PSP, and would instead be bringing it to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Yet that hasn’t stopped Harvest Moon publisher Natsume’s from going ahead with a localization of End of Serenity for the PSP.
The most eye-catching thing about End of Serenity is just how conservative it looks. According to Natsume’s President and CEO Hiro Maekawa its graphics are “Inspired by the look and feel of old school, 16-bit RPGs, we feel our fans will really connect to the game’s look, feel and story.”
Even the premise sounds retro in its simplicity: Mysterious objects known as “Atomigems” (used in everything from family heirlooms to objects of worship) have existed in End of Serenity’s world for some time, but recently they’ve become the target of a gang that goes by the name “Underworld”. We assume you have to figure out what Underworld are up to.
We can’t say whether End of Serenity’s retro-chic will evoke the best of the classic JRPG or mire it in cliché, but we’ll find out when the game goes up for sale in North America on June 24. It will be a digital exclusive, only available through PSN and priced at $14.99.
