E3 2014: Lara Returns in Rise of the Tomb Raider

At Sony’s E3 conference, we were treated to a glimpse of Crystal Dynamics’ new Tomb Raider game.

Taking place following the events of the first game, Lara appears to be suffering from PTSD following her experiences in 2013’s reboot, as the trailer shows her undergoing therapy from a psychiatrist.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Tomb Raider title if we spent the whole game in an extended therapy session (as enjoyable as they were in Grand Theft Auto V). Lara takes the shrink’s advice as an opportunity to find her calling in life, and sees her encounter on the island as the first step to fulfilling her destiny of becoming a legendary tomb raider. She’s shown thrusting herself into dangerous situations in the wild such as scaling steep cliffs with her recognizable climbing axe, and fighting off bears. She may now have the skills she needs, but now she must hone and implement them in her journey to become the master raider we all know and love.

This Lara is clearly a changed woman, and a far cry from the once fragile and scared girl she was when she first washed ashore the island of Yamatai. She’s now a skilled archer and seasoned archaeologist. Though this was only a cinematic trailer, it appears as though the new Tomb Raider game will run on a brand new or upgraded engine that will add even more detail to Lara’s face and body, in the next step towards photorealism. The last game, of course, featured new technology purely dedicated to rendering her hair convincingly.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with the last game, scoring it 8/10: “Even for all its faults, Tomb Raider is a game worth playing,” said Wes in his review. “It somehow manages to fix itself the more you play, which is both marvelous and baffling.”

I am an anime geek, JRPG fan and I love stealth games. You won't want to play me online, because I'll be the guy killing you from behind or sniping you across the map. That's just how I roll. And chicken is my kryptonite.
