After the success that was Child of Light (which we reviewed at a noteworthy 8/10), off-beat Ubisoft studio Ubisoft Montpellier has moved on to their next project, Valiant Hearts: The Great War.

With the release date of June 25th coming a lot sooner than many would think, Ubisoft released the first developer diary for the upcoming World War 1 title, which explains how the stylish art design of Valiant Hearts: The Great War gives way to an evocative, narrative experience.

According to the developer diary, the idea for the game initially came from artist Paul Tumelaire whose emotionally powerful sketches inspired the team to make a game based around his artwork. Although his art style isn’t realistic in the traditional sense, the sketched layered nature of it allows it to evoke emotions in a way that a more realistic style would not be able to establish.

You can take a look at the emotional edges surrounding the artwork in Valiant Hearts: The Great War in the developer diary below.

Daniel doesn't just play and write about games, but he also writes his own comics. He can usually be found arguing with Dale about who the best member of the X-Men is (it's Jamie Madrox, obviously)
